Story Line

In the first-ever episode of the Pokémon anime, we meet Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old boy from Pallet Town who dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master. On the day he's supposed to receive his first Pokémon from Professor Oak, Ash oversleeps and arrives late. By the time he gets there, the usual three starter Pokémon — Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle — have already been taken by other new trainers.

Initially, Pikachu is uncooperative and refuses to enter its Poké Ball. As Ash attempts to bond with Pikachu, they encounter a wild Spearow. After Ash throws a rock at it, the Spearow attacks, and soon, a whole flock is chasing them. In an effort to protect Pikachu, Ash risks his own safety. Moved by Ash's bravery, Pikachu unleashes a powerful Thunder Shock, fending off the Spearow flock.
